BARFI! movie review

It will capture you with all its "Sweetness"

Barfi! An ambitious project of UTV Motion Pictures , a much awaited film of the year. The hype for the film was generated ever since the first trailers were released over the internet and television.

Barfi! is set in a double flash back or to say it move “to and fro” in time. Story of a deaf and mute, mischievous, full of life, carefree, positive young lad living in Darjeeling. The film is set in the 1970’s. Barfi is a very lovable boy who is always upto something mischievous all the time and hence keeps the local cops on the run. He is loved by the town-folks but has an “irrational” fear that every one will leave him so he has a way to “TEST” their loyalties.

His father who is a driver for a very rich family- the Chatterjee’s is his only family. Mr. Chatterjee is an old man and has a grand daughter (Jhilmil- played by Priyanka Chopra) who he loves immensely but as she is autistic he is afraid of the treatment she will get from her parents, he sends her to Muskaan a place for the special children but is asked to come back after a few years as her grandfather is living his last days. Barfi is enjoying his life and doing what he does until one day he has a chance encounter with Shruti (Ileana D’cruz). Shruti has just come to Darjeeling and sees Barfi and is amused by him, he is taken aback by her beauty and even though they both are aware that Shruti is engaged and is about to get married in 3 months, have an affair only to realize that they could avoid the future but couldn’t run from it for long. Shruti under societal pressure gets married to another man and leaves Barfi behind.

Meanwhile Barfi ‘s father is unwell and in order to arrange for money for the operation makes an elaborate plan of kidnapping Jhilmil, but things don’t turn out well so instead decides to rob a bank but is almost caught, in all this rush he eventually kidnaps Jhilmil. He is unable to save his father, he sends Jhilmil back to her house but she follows him back and refuses to go back. They are on a run from the Darjeeling police and land up in Kolkata where they are living a nice life and day comes where Barfi meets Shruti again. One day Jhilmil goes missing. Will Barfi be able to find her? Will Shruti help him even though she loves him?

It is a story of true love, selfless love in its purest form. The film is all about its performances. It’s an innocent heart hitting story of Barfi, Jhilmil and Shruti. The characters are very endearing and detailed attention has been given, that’s what makes Barfi different. Even though there are minimal dialogues in the film you do not feel the absence as its all made up for by the tight story- telling and the beautiful moments between the lead characters.

Speaking of the performances- RANBIR KAPOOR is extremely good as Barfi, he is lovable and charming as he always is. Today’s heroes are all about the punch lines and “macho” dialogues but here the main protagonist is mute and yet Ranbir gives all the others a competition. He does complete justice and brings his own charm and innocence to the character or Barfi! It will definitely be appreciated by the audience and the critics.

Priyanka Chopra as Jhilmil is fabulous! She has done an exceptionally good job and she makes you fall in love with her not out of pity but for her innocence and sincerity. Though she plays the character of an autistic girl, she does it so well that she convinces you completely as an autistic girl and you will forget her glamorous personality while u watch the movie!
Ileana D’cruz plays Shruti, this is her first hindi movie, prior to this she has done many films in south. She does pretty well in her character, though she tends to get a little over shadowed by both Ranbir and Priyanka . Her character is also written very well and there is freshness to her.

The direction and script is by Anurag Basu. He is excellent as the director especially the background study by him for each character is done phenomenally. He has taken very sensitive off beat characters but has managed to make a complete out and out bollywood entertainer without giving it any heaviness. It is a simple sincere love story of Barfi . The narrative is very interesting and keeps you interested, very engaged, especially the second half. Darjeeling and Kolkata are shown beautifully.

The songs of the film haven’t caught up as anticipated but a few have been liked immensely like “Main Kya Karoon?” and “Phir Le Aaya Dil”. The music in the film is done by Pritam and he has done well. The songs come at appropriate times in the film and take the story forward by giving it a little push and fills the absence of any dialogues. The songs are well suited for the situations in the movie and don’t feel like a misfit.

All in all Barfi is a great entertainer and a family film. It’s sweet and has a different and new freshness to it with a different plot and story line. It will leave you in it’s awe, it will make you cry, smile and laugh, will make you look at life in a different way and make you love the concept of “true-pure love” don’t miss the magic of Barfi for the world! It’s a great entertainer go catch it in theatres near you!
