ABCD – Any Body Can Dance

It is the victory of the underdog in the end

ABCD – Anybody Can Dance is a dance movie to release in 3D format in India. ABCD Any Body Can Dance is directed by Remo D’Souza who is a choreographer himself, it stars Prabhu Deva and Ganesh Acharya in lead roles. It is produced by Siddharth Roy Kapur and it provides an opportunity by giving a break in bollywood films to participants of Dance India Dance Competition.

It is the story of Vishnu (Prabhudeva), a choreographer with an established dance academy headed by Jehangir (Kay Kay). There is a clash of their ideologies as on one hand Jehangir’s focus is solely on trophies and the TRPs, while the dance teacher sticks to the basics of that of opting for ‘performance’ rather than packaging.

Vishnu is ousted by this ambitious chief who has a yearning for the rich and elite students. Jehangir gives an upper hand to rich social status and material wealth of his students, rather than the really talented ones.

Out of the academy, he takes on the challenge of mentoring a group of untrained dancers to set-up the best dance team in the country. What happens is while watching some street dancers performing at a Ganesh Utsav (Celebrations), he realises the raw talent in these guys.

So then he teams of his old time friend Gopi (Ganesh Acharya) and then trains this team of raw talent, to participate in a competition in a national dance reality show. In the process there are various ups and downs.

At one moment, their spirits are up, suddenly let-downs, flip-flops, and so on, but they struggle and overcome their drawbacks and fragile egos.

As the dance teacher, Prabhudeva himself shows the way – with his high-power dances, and leads his team like a positive thinker. Ganesh Acharya aptly supports the leader. Apart from Prabhudeva, its an impressive negative performance from Kay Kay who shows off with an arrogance and attitude.

There are fantastic dances from newcomers – Salman, Dharmesh, Punit and Lauren. Any Body Can Dance has a colourful and vibrant appeal. A bit sensitive issue of drugs is also incorporated in the story. It is worth a watch not only for the dance crazy but generally who admire good cinema.

While presenting a wide array of dance sequences, the underlying trend is that of triumph of the underdog. It has some moving scenes and its definitely unique.

While its difficult to realize any additional impact of presenting this film in 3D format, it is the grand finale act that is really spectacular. Not ever seen before.
