The above titled movie is the latest offering from Dharma Productions, this is amply made known with Karan Johar himself putting in an uninspiring cameo as a marriage celebrity. Released on 2nd October 2025, Sunny Sanskari Ki Tulsi Kumari is now streaming on Netflix.
Though it may suggest otherwise but the eponymous Sunny is not so ‘sanskari’ and Tulsi is not your average ‘Main Tulsi tere angan ki’ types. Like a rollercoaster it starts out as a fun flick then goes into conflict, then down to a tearjerker then again bouncing back for a happy ending.
In current times love is just a ‘situationship’ until someone else comes along who attracts you so much that you will dump your love to marry a stranger, then explain it away as parental pressure. Then enter the ex-es wishing to break the newly formed alliance and reclaim what is theirs, they even have the gall to ask ‘I hope you are not feeling awkward’. That’s confused millennials for you, one of the character also accepts it. That’s the gist of the story.
There are a few places where it tickles your funny bone but the rest is just loud or over acting by the protagonists namely Janhvi Kapoor and Varun Dhawan respectively.
Sanya is restrained and best of the lot however she has precious little to do other then hug the two gents in her life. Varun’s sidekick does some slapstick, however Manish Paul as the wedding planner tries to put some energy in the proceedings when things begin to sag, always good to have a career comic at hand to dress up a scene. Rest of the cast and other nuances are ‘had-beens’ and nothing to write home about.
As Sunny Sanskari Ki Tulsi Kumari is a marriage caper with a lot of song and dance however none of the tunes inspire even a foot tap though shot on grand scale with gusto. Cinematography is above average and the marriage venue of Raffles Udaipur has been captured beautifully and a lot of other places around Udaipur like Pichhola lake and Chandpole.
The direction by Shashank Khaitan is quite ordinary but visuals are delightful, especially the ariel shots of the marriage venue, the lake and the long ramp leading from the venue to the dock on the lake, now imagine Janhavi running down the ramp, that is the scene for the big screen.
As mentioned Sunny Sanskari Ki Tulsi Kumari’s scale is grand as it does look like a big fat Indian wedding in progress. It’s a ‘Hum Aapke Hain Kaun’ of the third kind. (Running time – 135 minutes)
