Kai Po Che – movie review

Brothers... for life

The film Kai Po Che is based on Chetan Bhagat’s bestselling novel ‘The 3 Mistakes of My Life’. Kai Po Che actually means a triumphant yell in Gujarati, usually heard during the kite flying festival. This slice of life film is an unforgettable ode to friendship and the magical moments one shares with one’s closest pals.

Kai Po Che- movie review

Abhishek Kapoor shows celebrations of festivals, drunken dancing, watching cricket matches together, how three friends strategize to catch the attention of the cute neighborhood girl. Friendship is being there to watch each other’s back in troubled times and to celebrate one’s successes by screaming “Kai Po Che”!

It is the story of best friends Ishaan (Sushant Singh Rajput), Omi (Amit Sadh) and Govind (Raj Kumar Yadav). This trio is young, ambitious and restless – who want to make a mark in the India of the early 2000’s and the film depicts some of the key happenings of that time.

There is excitement all around as a new millennium has just dawned, India is now a nuclear power and it is a perfect time and the right place for the 3 Ahmedabad boys to start a business that could be their ticket to fame and riches.

In a country where cricket is religion, they hit upon a brilliant plan – to start a training academy that could produce India’s next sporting superstars! They start with a sports equipment shop and then the cricket training academy. But soon, differences surface and they drift apart.

What follows is without doubt the greatest adventure of their lives, as they attempt to navigate the big hurdles in the path of fulfilling their dreams.

It is an appealing story of friendship, its bonding as the friends help each other in times of distress. This is what the first half is about. Post interval the director deftly portrays how the Bhuj earthquake (2001) and then the Godhra riots (2002) change the lives of these close buddies.

Abhishek Kapoor skillfully, handles the narrative and even the romantic track doesn’t distract us from the main plot of the film.

Performances from Sushant Singh Rajput and Raj Kumar Yadav are above the notch and quite restrained. While Amit Sadh’s character has shades of grey but he delivers a credible portrayal.

It isn’t the usual Bollywood formula film. This is the director’s film and he ought to be commended for such a brilliant film. Kai Po Che isn’t the mainstream bollywood film for the masses. It will be appreciated by the urban audience.
