Hastey Hastey, movie review

The director’s attempt to make Hastey Hastey a youthful, musical, romantic comedy with a twist in the tale, has met with lukewarm response. We also have the three Rajpal Yadavs who “tries” to be funny but audience is not amused with this guy who keeps saying “dude” and starts running after every white-skinned girl.

The film Hastey Hastey is about Neel (Jimmy Sheirgill), a brilliant student at Columbia University and the pretty Maya Fernandez (Nisha Rawal) the love of his life, are on the verge of starting a new life together in New York. Sunny Malhotra (Rajpal Yadav) is Neel’s roommate, teammate and conscience.

Academically challenged and a compulsive flirt, he gets involved in a series of hilarious situations with his American love Tina (Sarah Thomas).

Just when life seems perfect, Neel accepts a career opportunity that requires him to go to India to set up a call centre business. Much against Maya’s wishes Neel travels to India with Sunny.

In India, Tanvi (Monishka Gupta) is a young executive who goes out of her way to help Neel and his team here. She goes out of her way to make things comfortable for Neel and his team. Her reason for doing so is that she is attracted to Neel and tries to make her way into his heart. However, Neel being deeply in love with his US girlfriend Maya, rejects Tanvi.

Rejection is something that Tanvi is unable to handle, and now this revenge seeking girl creates a trap which leads Neel in to deep trouble professionally and personally. Now a packet containing pics showing Jimmy getting cozy with Tanvi reaches Maya in the US. Maya’s father now is not keen on Neel and even Maya dumps Neel and is ready for marriage with anyone else but him. Here in India, Tanvi plots and gets Neel involved in a fraud, making his life more miserable.

Then there is one very famous author who is a friend of Jimmy who always knew that Neel was innocent. After much struggle, Neel manages to prove his innocence. On the TV, this author informs audience how Jimmy is a gem of a person, after all he has now been acquitted of fraud. Nisha manages to catch this footage, instantly changes her mind and even calls off her impending marriage. She comes back to India in search of Jimmy and in the end … like any other bollywood movie.

Jimmy Shergill the usually talented actor, struggles here to carry off convincingly as the student in the US. Rajpal Yadav though given 3 different roles in this film is barely okay with his usual buffoonery. Infact, the comic angle in Hastey Hastey does not work well as most of the jokes are tasteless.
