Badmaash Company – movie review

They did all the wrong things... The right way!

Badmaash Company, movie review

Badmaash Company is an extraordinary story set in the 1990’s in middle class Bombay (as it was known then), of four ordinary youngsters – Shahid Kapoor, Anushka Sharma, Meiyang Chang and Vir Das – who came together to start an import business of things longed for by yuppie Indians! Anything “imported” was good, and everything Indian was somewhat old-fashioned. Badmaash Company movie review…

Karan (Shahid Kapoor), 21, genius, a middle class boy, with a dream to make millions… fast! One day his ‘beautiful mind’ thinks up the “big idea” to make it all achievable!

Bulbul (Anushka Sharma) is a feisty and fiery small town girl, hungry to make it in the big city of dreams, Bombay. An encounter with the sleazy side of the modeling world force her to abandon her big dream… till she meets Karan, with whom she shares an even bigger dream and loses her heart to him.

Chandu (Vir Das) is an eternal wannabe actor, is sincere in his passion of making it as a leading man in the movies, but his bitter and dominating father, will have none of it. In Karan lies the only chance Chandu has of making it big.

Zing (Meiyang Chang) the boy with chinky eyes is more than just the average boy from Sikkim. His life is heading nowhere and his dreams are on hold, until he meets Karan, who has an even bigger dream!

Karan and his 3 friends set out to do all the wrong things… the right way. Their “Badmaash Company” makes the foursome the youngest millionaires in town and they start to live their dream! But friendship and money make uneasy partners. Add to this Karan’s fatal flaw – his ego. Karan outrides his demons as he struggles to keep his love and friendship intact.

What made their venture such a stupendous success was the fact that they found a way to beat the system and soon became the undisputed kings in their business, realizing their one dream of making quick money by doing all the wrong things… the right way!

Living the life of champagne wishes and caviar dreams, the four friends discover that to make a business successful you don’t need big money.

All you need is a big idea!

With their larger than life schemes, the four go on a wild roller-coaster ride into the world of sheer glitz and glamour where the stakes are high and risks even higher!

Just when Karan and his pals start thinking that they have conquered it all, and now that Karan starts thinking that he is God, a stroke of bad luck brings him back to Ground Zero, to experience the harsh realities of life.

All was well and hunky dory till one day the four maverick entrepreneurs are forced to shut shop… until they come up with yet another perfect plan to beat the system…
Just one more time…!

The best part about this film Badmaash Company is that you identify with the mindset of these four friends who aspire to reach the pinnacle of success using shortcuts. The con games, the mindset of the youth indulge in making quick bucks are portrayed sensible.

This is amongst Shahid Kapoor’s finest works. Watch him blow his top in a restaurant sequence with Vir Das and his girlfriend and in yet another scene where he is remorseful when he meets a pregnant Anushka. The chemistry between Anushka and Shahid is just electrifying.

Anushka Sharma is back in the public eye. She looks hot and elegant, and lights up the screen with her livewire performance.

Vir Das and Meiyang Chang are yet another revelation that Bollywood has many new talented faces. Anupam Kher, Kiran Juneja and Pawan Malhotra make their presence felt.

Unlike most of the Bollywood flicks, Badmaash Company does not insult your intelligence with due credit to Parmeet Sethi. Badmaash Company is sold entertainment and a nice, watchable experience.
