The film Saira Khan Case is based on the Sharia law specifically about marriage and divorce that is existing in Muslim culture in India. Directed by Karan Razdan and Swati Chauhan have directed Saira Khan Case that features Rajniesh Duggall, Poonam Dubey, Aradhana Sharma and Karan Razdan in pivotal roles.
Karan Razdan is known for Rajani Television series and making controversial films like Hindutva Chapter One, Mittal versus Mittal and Girlfriend. He has not only made this film educative but also entertaining.
Courtroom drama plays the main focus of this film written by Swati Chauhan and Karan Razdan. It is about a Muslim lady with three children, whose husband very simply seeks Divorce on uttering just these three words – Talaq, Talaq, Talaq.
After a cruel talaq, the resilient mother defies oppressive laws and fights back through India’s secular courts-battling for her children, her rights, and her dignity in a powerful journey of justice and courage.
However, this decision barely affects the life of the husband, whereas the world has turned upside down in the life of this woman. This story is based on a real case that was handled by ex-Principal Judge Swati Chauhan, who is also the co-director of the film Saira Khan Case.
Poonam Dubey plays the wife to Hanif (Rajniesh Duggall) and Advocate Gauri Kaul’s character is brilliantly carried out by Aradhana Sharma.
There are meaningful conversations, talks about gender equality, women’s rights, importance of fair judicial process underlining double standards that exist in the society even today.
The story draws heavily from a landmark judgement of 2014 on triple talaq. It is evident that Swati Chauhan and Karan Razdan must have carried out an incisive research that shows in their direction.
Poonam Dubey aptly carries of the character of an adamant woman Saira Khan who fights for her rights, Karan Razdan dons the character of Machiavellian husband who wants to marry another woman, though we cannot call him cunning, to each one his own.
What is noteworthy is that this film doesn’t have any masala like item numbers or any other frills, the director duo have given a fair treatment to such a controversial subject is a revelation that is worth remembering.
I can assure you that you would come out mentally disturbed as you would realize the atrocities of that particular Muslim law. Let us not blame the community entirely but in this particular case it was the woman who had to undergo the suffering.
Saira Khan Case the movie sets out to entertain even while educating you. I would put it this way that this film provides educative entertainment, a feat rarely attempted by directors and Karan Razdan is one of them.
