Kaminey – movie review

A Classic Action Thriller

Kaminey, movie review

Kaminey is a story about a pair of twins – Charlie and Guddu (played by Shahid Kapur). The twins who have grown up in the streets of Mumbai, can’t stand the sight of each other. They are as different as chalk and cheese but have a common speech problem. While Guddu stammers, Charlie Charlie lisps and his speech deficiency is that he pronounces the S sounds with an F sound. Kaminey movie review…

The twins are completely different and have captivating identities. Charlie dreams of finding a short cut to fortune, and works for a betting syndicate. Charlie bets big – Rs. 1 lakh on a horse during a fixed race, only to be double-crossed by the jockey and loses the money. The other brother Guddu is sincere and is involved with an NGO.

One fateful rainy night, their carefully separated lives cross paths. Charlie gets mixed up in a deathly get-rich-quick scheme, while Guddu realizes that the love of his life Sweety (Priyanka Chopra) has unwittingly put a price on his head. Sweety is a strong willed Marathi ‘mulgi’ – a Maharashtrian girl – whose brother is a rugged local politician Sunil Shekhar Bhope (Amole Gupte).
It’s a dark comic ride here onwards as the brothers are sucked into a world of drugs, guns and money.

Their lives collide head on with gangsters, rebel soldiers, rogue politicians and crooked cops. In the middle of this crazy adventure, the brothers have to run to protect themselves, their dreams and their love…

And most importantly, they realize that all they have is each other.

Other `kamineys’ (meaning Scoundrels) appear one after the other. Tashi the gangster (Tenzing Nima), with his cheroot and fancy yatch. A trio of Bengali brothers who fix races (Deb Mukherjee being the eldest). Local hood Bhope Bhau, lover of Marathi `manoos’. Crooked cops fronting a huge drug deal. A guitar full of white powder worth crores. The director has immaculately etched out the peculiarities of each of these kaminey or the bad men.

The climax of Kaminey is set in a Mumbai `basti’ or a place somewhat like the refined slum. This basti turns wild with awful violence that the gun-battle is raging with each and every single `kamina’ ending up gathering in the basti in the climax scene that its just violence, gunshots and too much noise.

Dhan Te Nan – the number is rage of the town. Its rendered by Sukhwinder Singh, Vishal Dadlani, Pehli Baar Mohabbat by Mohit Chauhan and Raat Ke Dhai Baje Suresh Wadkar, Rekha Bhardwaj, Sunidhi Chauhan, Kunal Ganjawala

Kaminey has a new and unique style of story telling and it could very well set a new trend in Bollywood cinema. Cinematic excellence at its best.
