Gippi – movie review

An overweight teenage girl learns to love herself, gets confident in life

A coming-of-age story of an ordinary, overweight girl – Gippi, who through the course of the film, learns to love herself for exactly who she is.

Gippi (Riya Vij) is a 14-year-old girl who lives in Simla with her mother Pappi (Divya Dutta) and little brother Booboo (Arbaz Kadwani). It is directed by debutant Sonam Nair and produced by Hiroo Yash Johar & Karan Johar.

Anshuman Mahaley’s cinematography wonderfully captures the striking beauty of the landscapes and hilly terrain of Himachal Pradesh.

She is overweight and awkward and doesn’t know how to handle the physical, emotional and social changes happening in her life. In school, she is a backbencher and is constantly bullied by the popular queen-bee Shamira (Jayati Modi).

At home, she’s trying to figure out how to deal with living in a broken home. In the middle of all this chaos, she falls madly in love with Arjun (Taaha Shah) an older, brooding heartbreaker. When her love story comes to a humiliating end, and she is publicly scorned, she decides to take her life in her hands and accepts Shamira’s challenge to stand against her in the school elections.

Whatever the final outcome might be, Gippi makes sure she has a great time in the journey, filling it with delicious desserts, funny teachers, school crushes, and Shammi Kapoor dances.

The kids emote confidence in their performances and are very natural all throughout the story. It is that tender phase of life when the kids experience transformation between teens and adulthood.

It is a film for those of you who love to think back in life and value their school days. It has very fine moments depicting the feeling of insecurity and the anxiety showcased in those growing up teen years – once in a lifetime and the metamorphosis and foundation of a teen’s thinking and nature for the rest of their lives.

Full credit to the debutant director Sonam for her flawless style of story telling. Gippi is a tale of an underdog, who picks herself up from nothing and finds herself at the top of her own little world.
