David – Hindi movie review

Three Lives... Three Destinies...One Name

David, hindi film, directed by Bejoy Nambiar, is the tale of three men from different parts of the world, timed in three different eras.

It is often said that everyone arrives and departs with their own destiny, but often the destinies of seemingly un-connected people intertwine to bring a drastic change in their lives.

Way back in 1975 in London, a 30-year-old David is the protégé of a mafia don, his namesake in 1999 in Mumbai is a musician. And the third ‘David’ stays in contemporary Goa, and he is now 40!

The director who gave us Shaitaan, now ties the tales of the three… and several others with crafty grit in this action thriller.

About all the three Davids – Vikram’s story takes place in Goa, while the two other stories are featured as that in Mumbai and London and that they transpire at different periods.

Neil Nitin Mukesh works hard in this one and sports a complete retro-gangster look, with a hefty moustache for his role in the film. His portions are shot in London. Monica Dogra is paired opposite Neil Nitin Mukesh’s David.

Vinay Virmani (the Canadian-Indian actor) plays the third character called David in the film. He is a musician, and his life is Mumbai based, where Sheetal Menon and Lara Dutta are pivotal in his life.

Vikram and Isha Sharvani reside in Goa, and a song featuring Remo Fernandes is also included in this segment.

Anupama Kumar, (who shot to fame in Ishqiya), plays a Pakistani woman of the 1970s. Various locations of Canada, UK, Belfast, Ooty, Kerala, Goa and Mumbai are beautifully shot in the film.

It is 1975 in London – and a 30 year old David works for Iqbal Ghani, a dreaded Mafia don, who controls the entire Asian community. He is a protege who is poised to take over the empire until a revelation which changes the course of his future.

Now its 1999 (Mumbai) and this David (Vinay Virmani) is a musician is just 19, born into a family of stanch Christians. Like friends of age, he’s a happy go lucky teenager who gets disturbed in life when his family gets dragged into a political issue.

And then in 2010 Goa – David (Vikram) is a fisherman’s son in the small fishing village of Betul in Goa. This 40 year old falls in love with the deaf and mute Roma (Isha Sharvani) . But Roma is engaged and is about to get married in a couple of weeks. She is about to get married to Davids’s best friend.

All 3 Davids of their respective eras are about to take a step which will have a definitive impact in their lives.

Its Vikram’s performance and Isha Sharvani who are fabulous. Neil Nitin Mukesh and Vinay Virmani fit well into their characters.

Bejoy Nambiar craftily creates some fascinating moments in each of the eras, but it is difficult to understand the relevance or inter-linking of these three periods. The film stretches so much in the first half, that it virtually tests your patience.
