C U Soon – movie review

India's first Computer Screen Film

C U Soon on Amazon Prime

Every once in a while something new comes up on the OTT platform, we’re talking about the latest Malayalam offering on Amazon prime by the name of C U Soon. The uniqueness of this movies lies in the fact that it has been entirely shot on an Iphone and whatever interaction is shown between the characters on the screen is entirely on a phone (video chatting) or on social media by text or video on a computer monitor.

C U Soon the movie uses only the digital platforms. It definitely was a singular experience and a good one at that. There is not much we can talk about the story as we have seen such movies before in fact recently the Vidyut Jamwal movie Khuda Hafiz was based on this very theme of how recruitment agencies send unsuspecting young girls abroad, specially the Middle-East countries, on a promise of a lucrative job and how they end up only being sex slaves there, but the treatment of the movie is absolutely brand new.

There is no bashing up of the bad guys, no guns or glory, just a simple story that unfolds in front of you on a computer monitor screen and sucks on your attention and keeps you involved as to what will happen next. How will the protagonist Jimmy (Roshan Mathew) saves the girl Anumol (Darshana Rajendran) whom he encountered on a dating site and they fell in love and is desperate to marry. What follows next the exchange of conversations between Jimmy and his cousin Kevin (Fahadh Faasil), Anumol the doctor (Dr. Prashant played by Saiju Kurup), Jimmy’s mother in U.S., the abuse, the investigation, the medical treatment is all shown thru video calls, social media video exchanges and hacking into Government and personal sites.

C U Soon is worth a look just for the the way it has been picturised. The flow of the movie is excellent and screenplay or rather the monitor play is super. The story is set in Dubai. This is a very interesting experiment in these pandemic times as this movie was shot in a three month schedule during the height of covid-19 June-Aug period this year. If this pandemic goes on further we might see many such experimental movies in the future it has opened floodgates for our young filmmakers to experiment, those who have a limited budget.

The acting is good especially Kevin who stands out when he realises that it is his research for the girl which was incomplete and he might have put his cousin Jimmy in trouble, his desperation and then the realization as to what he can do next to help him out, all this sitting on his desk has been captured beautifully. Other characters have also emoted well and it has been captured exquisitely.

It is also said that the whole movie was shot at Fahadh Fazil’s apartment who is also one of the producer. The run length is 98 minutes thus tight editing and finish. It is directed by Mahesh Narayanan. Recommended to be viewed.
