Bollywood can proudly announce its arrival to the world with its Super Hero Krrish, the most powerful antagonist – Kaal, Kaya the chameleon – who can adapt any person’s character and body, the powerful Cheetahwoman and the Antman who creates havoc with his long, highly flexible forked tongue that can be extended and used to trap its prey. The Lunchbox is the story of two strangers who fall in love over a lunchbox of letters. What is interesting to watch in this film is that do they ever meet? This one has Irrfan’s one of the career best performances playing a middle-aged man Saajan Fernandes. Saajan’s wife having died, having no children, he is a typical single man sort of character who is avoided by all around him. One day, it so happens that a lunchbox prepared by Ila (Nimrat Kaur) for her husband, by some error, reaches Saajan who shamelessly devours the food and leaves nothing in the empty lunch box which makes Ila realize about the slip-up. Directed by Ahishor Solomon,John Day is lifted from the 2002 Spanish film, La Caja 507 (Box507). It begins with teenage boy impressing his girlfriend by driving into dense forest, and then taking her into an abandoned estate. She is impressed, but that’s the last time we see her and the next scene is her parents carrying out her final rituals and laying her body to peace. What would have been a taut thriller, the film goes haywire as the screenplay loosens its pace and at times it is frustratingly slow. John Day(Naseeruddin Shah) is a bank manager, and a happy family man with his wife (Shernaz Patel) and a teenage daughter. Grand Masti
Grand Masti comes from the makers of Masti (2004), and ever since its initial promos it was projected as an adult comedy film, and so it is. It isn’t expected to be a family film. Though the comedy at times falls much below our expectations. Simply put, most of the times it is cheap humour. Take for instance, even the first part – Masti wasn’t appreciated by the family audience or the classes. This one too would be lapped up by the masses. Especially the Indian audience, maybe because there have never been Bollywood adult comedies before which can be equated or compared with. It is a bit surprising that Deshmukh Junior and Vivek Oberoi signed for such ‘adult comedy’ which in its conclusion, is much below the ideal or broadly adult comedy levels. Zanjeer is an action film directed by Apoorva Lakhia, which marks the Bollywood debut of Tollywood actor Ram Charan in the lead role as the cop, along with Priyanka Chopra an NRI on a visit to friends wedding in Mumbai, and a witness to a murder. Before we go further, if this remake is compared to the original Zanjeer (Amitabh and Jaya), then it would be wise to rate it as 2/5 stars. As there is no one to match the intensity and angry young man looks of Amitabh few decades ago. There should be no comparison with the 1973 film with the iconic Amitabh and Pran as Sher Khan. Watching the film as the new generation would view it, this one has all the action and fun expected in a Bollywood film.
