Saas Bahu aur Sensex’s story has the Sensex as a backdrop to the lives of the most unlikely investors. Indians are terrifically progressive people and this film shows that in a light hearted way. The film has a multi-cultural neighbourhood, call center classes and fun. There is the saas-bahu part and share market excitements, women empowerment, and even a love triangle.
Binita Sen (Kiron Kher) divorces her husband and leaves their comfortable home in Kolkata. She comes to the new environs of Navi Mumbai along with her daughter Nitya (Tanushree Dutta).
Nitya drops her ambition to do her MBA in the USA, begins to work at a call centre. Facing difficulties in the new city, new job, she finds it a little easier however to cope with the situation, courtesy her newfound friend, Ritesh Jetmalani (Ankur Khanna) who is very caring and understanding.
Nitya’s mother Binita Sen befriends the women in their colony in Navi Mumbai and even joins their kitty parties. She believes that this is the best opportunity to start life afresh, knowing in her heart that her daughter is annoyed with her and that her mom is responsible for their hard life in a new city.
Binita Sen’s father had left her some shares and then she locates her father’s old stock broker to discover the worth of her holdings. Here she meets Firoz Sethna (Farooq Shaikh), an ethical but irritable and a weird stock broker who guides her in her investments.
Now the call centre friend Ritesh has a girl friend Kirti Wagaskar (Masumi Makhija) who is dreams high. She has grand plans for her marriage. Kirti dislikes the lifestyle of her elder sister Parimal who is a good housewife to her grumpy husband Ganpatrao.
The fun begins when the kitty ladies get suspicious of Binitar’s unexplained increase in wealth, how love plays up against money forms the twist in the tale. This group of kitty party ladies, feel, that Binita is up to something dubious, they haven’t got the gossip and keep wondering why did she leave her husband anyways?
One day in Nitya’s call center, by chance she happens to hear the conversation of the CEO’s of two companies who are visiting her office. She tells her mother about it and that they are going to get their children married. Binita advises her friends to invest in their companies because the stock prices are likely to go up with the marriage.
So now the news of Ritesh marrying Kirti is favorable for everyone and the markets too. Nitya, despite her feelings for Ritesh, cannot do anything more. Binita sees her daughter’s dilemma and finally tells her the real reason for her coming to New Mumbai. Her husband had left her for a younger woman, and she didn’t want her daughter to deal with the pressure or gossip nor did she want to be dependent on him.
Then comes the wedding day for Ritesh. Kirti has other plans, and the tamasha begins. There is shocking news for the stock prices. Then again some foreign investors develop a fancy for this company, and then the SENSEX soars again….
On the acting front, Masumi Makhija, Tanushree Dutta are their usual. The film survives on the performances of Farooq Shaikh and Kiron Kher. Farooq Shaikh is awesome in the role of a cranky stock broker. Ankur Khanna has given a decent performance.
