Divergent – Hollywood Film Review

What makes you different, makes you dangerous

Divergent

In the futuristic Chicago, society is divided into 5 factions, and DIVERGENT is a thrilling action-adventure film set in a world where people are divided into distinct factions based on human virtues. The film is based on the best-selling book series by Veronica Roth. The factions are – Abnegation (Those who are Selfless), Amity (Peaceful), Candor (Honest), Dauntless (Brave) and Erudite (Intelligent)

As per the created system, each year the 16 year olds have to undertake a serum-based aptitude test that indicates which faction they would fit into. They are informed of the result and then they have to inform their choice at the Choosing Ceremony.

Originally born into Abnegation, Beatrice ‘Tris’ Prior (Shailene Woodley) is idealistic, vulnerable, brave and compassionate. When faced with the biggest decision of her life, she struggles between choosing her family and her yearning desire to discover her true identity.

The test is performed under supervision of Tori (Maggie), a member of the Dauntless faction. She administers Tris’aptitude test and first discovers that Tris is Divergent. As she continues to provide Tris with advice, the two establish a bond
that helps Tris throughout her journey.

Tris is warned she is Divergent and will never fit into any one group. When she discovers a conspiracy by a faction leader (Kate Winslet)to destroy all Divergents, Tris must learn to trust in the mysterious Four (Theo James) and together they must find out what makes being Divergent so dangerous before it’s too late.

Four is a strong character, mentally tough and emotionally guarded. He is one of the leaders in the Dauntless faction with a mysterious past. As an instructor, he becomes close to Tris and helps guide her during her initiation process.

Leader of the Erudite faction, Jeanine (Kate Winslet) is a cold, calculating, and wickedly manipulative lady. Despite her gifted intelligence, Jeanine’s unscrupulous desire for absolute control poses a serious threat to the five factions.

It is a creatively picturized, imaginative futuristic action – thriller. Though it isn’t an edge of the seat thriller, yet it manages to keep the viewer engrossed in the the girl’s determination to break away from absolute control of a wicked manipulative control over the lives of the people in the future.

A gripping futuristic action thriller.
