Dr Sugat G Waghmare spells out his vision for producing Out of Syllabus to Paresh B Mehta, Editor of Filmytown.com:

As a debutante film producer, what made you choose this subject?
I have been working on this subject as my child for the past 30 years. I have observed and researched child beggars, child labour, child abuse, child marriage and child trafficking. I have collated extensive date and information on all these issues. As a team, we are about 100-180 people working together on these issues. I have done a lot of work on employment and unemployment. I have done a lot of work on Dalit Indian Chambers of Commerce and Industries. Being a National Council Member, I have been working to provide employment to thousands of people. In addition to this, the issue of Jeevala is a big issue.

How relevant are these issues to your film?
Yes. Apart from these, we have taken up issues of rampant cutting of trees, pollution, global warming, all these things are very important. How can we raise awareness on these issues? We can utilize the audio-visual medium to convey these issues to the people.

Could you elaborate on the title of your film – Out of syllabus?
This is a theme that MPC’s children are preparing for MPC. Preparing for MPC itself is very difficult average students and particularly for the children below the middle class. It’s very difficult, but still aspirational students take it. And from that, these kids see that the environment is in danger. So, to save the world, the efforts which these people are reaching out to is out of syllabus, for the environment, they have shown a journey in this film. And we tried to do a different journey. And there is always a resolution to any problem. This film delves into this awareness and promotes ‘Love Nature’.

As an established entrepreneur, what drew you to filmmaking?
A: While this is my debut as a filmmaker, my background is as a social activist and a second-generation builder. Since 1981, I’ve been expanding the construction legacy my father built, moving from Akola to Mumbai with landmark projects like Maximus City and Yogakshema Residency. I am entering the film industry now because I believe cinema is the most powerful platform to merge my entrepreneurial experience with my passion for social causes.

Kadhipatta – Marathi movie review

What motivated you to enter film production, and what is the core purpose behind your work? What message do you hope to convey to your audience?
My primary goal is to use cinema as a wake-up call regarding our environment. We are currently playing a dangerous game with nature. Through this film, I want to show that if we continue to neglect our ecosystem, the consequences will be devastating. We are moving toward a future where even the oxygen we breathe may have to be purchased at a premium.

Beyond general pollution, the film specifically addresses the melting of the Himalayan glaciers. Our planet maintains a delicate balance between land and water; if these glaciers vanish due to rising temperatures, that balance is destroyed, putting all human life at risk. I chose this project because environmental preservation is no longer just a “topic”—it is a critical issue of survival that the audience needs to witness.

Why was it important to make this film available in other languages?
This isn’t just a Marathi story; it’s a story for everyone. Releasing it in Telugu, Tamil, Kannada and Malayalam allows us to connect with audiences across the country and share our vision with as many people as possible.
