Shakal Pe Mat Ja - movie review

Shakal Pe Mat Ja is an unconventional film and its title itself sounds funny. The concept is interesting, and the four protagonists are very natural, but the film lags in its departments of screenplay and editing.

It is a story of 4 young boys who get caught up as suspects at the Delhi international airport, on the anniversary of the American terrorist attacks, while capturing a American Airways aircraft landing on their camera.

Shakal Pe Mat Ja is a comedy based on mistaken identities with the background of terrorism and its threat. Four young people are detained at the Delhi international airport, while capturing an aircraft landing, on their handycam.

Four amateur filmmakers are out to film a documentary on security issues around the airport. Incidentally, it is a high alert around the capital’s airport area and thus they become victims of suspicion.

Cops grab hold of them and the camera just as they take a picture of an American aircraft landing at the airport.

When the authorities start interrogation, everything turns topsy-turvy with every incident becoming a rib-tickler. The chaps are innocent and during their interrogation, the more they speak to defend themselves, more they land into trouble.

Each of them is innocent and funny. There are some incidents which put you off. Like the constant farts by the fatso among them and the stupidity of the long haired character which appears unnatural at times. It also has some genuinely comic moments like the scenes involving the Airport manager and other moments where constable on duty, who is hassled by his wife over the mobile phone.

Telephonic conversation between the chief of “Al Baquaida” gang (Zakhir Hussain) and their Mumbai counterparts are hilarious.

The film also stars Aamna Sharif who has a brief role. Saurabh Shukla is impressively funny as the ATS officer. Raghubir Yadav is typical as the cop in charge of the Airport chowky alongwith Umang Jain. Shubh, Chitrak, Pratik and Harsh are a talented lot.

Debutant director Shubh Mukherjee has put in earnest efforts for the film Shakal Pe Mat Ja. He is well supported by the quartet (which includes him) who is mistaken as terrorists.

The film opens well, but then it loses pace. At the intermission one wonders whether its worth to watch it any further. Surprisingly, post interval the proceedings becoming so interesting and there are many funny moments that make up for the shoddier first half.

Shakal Pe Mat Ja does have its funny moments and the characters are well funnily etched out.
