Wonder Woman 1984 movie review
Another Hollywood extravaganza is Wonder Woman 1984 that has been recently released on Amazon. A superhero flick this time not from MCU (Marvel Comics Universe) but from DCU (DC comics Universe) the franchise which counts Superman and Batman in the legion of their superheros apart from Wonder Woman. With such antecedents we expected some great script, screenplay and action in this flick specially as it had to live upto its predecessor which did provide wholesome entertainment. Wonder Woman 1984 review... However it fails miserably in all departments. Even the chemistry between the lead characters that was great in the previous WW movie is missing and looks forced in this film. The opening scene is of typical Hollywood grandeur a Potterisque competition in an open stadium, the spectacle is definitely breathtaking to be seen on the big screen. Once the pandemic is over and the movie rel ....

Mrs Serial Killer (2020)
Chanced upon a little known gory murder mystery which goes by the name of Mrs Serial Killer is streaming now on Netflix and would have gone unnoticed if I was not sifting through the movies that I want to see. Released almost a year ago, Mrs Serial Killer is really less known as there was no fanfare or much hype and hoola created on its launch. It has got a few A-listers in its acting roll call namely Jacqueline Fernandez in the title role and also the protagonist is the new slasher in town and Manoj Bajpai plays her doctor husband with Mohit Raina playing a cop who is also her ex-lover, you get the love triangle drift by now isn't it? The other characters, there is nothing much to write home about they flit in ànd out throughout the movie. The thing that irritates you as the movie begins, is that the events are too sudden and in your face, disjoint and the characters behave as if ....

Coolie No 2 (2020) movie review
What is a sure shot formula for a movie's success? A good script, direction, acting or is it screenplay or none of the above. It is but rehash- and that's right, as this seems to be the current flavour for success. Refurbish one's own movies and serving it afresh with new production values, a new star cast and new settings. This is what David Dhavan has done with his own Coolie No 1  (this is his second one after Judwaa). Is it a dearth of new scripts, or did the director find some flaws in his original which he wanted to rectify (if that is the case, then he fails miserably) or was it a tribute to the original that was released in 1995 and now celebrating its Silver Jubilee year? The original Coolie No 1 with Govinda and Karishma was an entertainer and delight to watch. This time around he has taken his son Varun Dhavan to reprise the role of Raju coolie and Sara Ali Khan appears ....

Torbaaz movie review
Torbaaz is the latest offering streaming on the Netflix platform that is written and directed by Girish Malik. It is a story of orphaned refugee children staying in camps on the borders of Afghanistan adjacent to Pakistan, whose parents have either died in Fidayeen attacks (suicide bombings) or whose parents have been Fidayeen themselves. Fidayeens are the self sacrificing human bombs who for their own religious cause perpetrate suicide bombings. What could have been a story of victory over the evil forces of self-proclaimed groups who in the garb of changing the system or ethnic cleansing are but perpetrating terrorism, and thus Torbaaz turns out a damp squib. The Talibani terrorists target the refugee children of fidayeen attacks and shamelessly train them to be suicide bombers. Here was an excellent story premise but was ruined due to directorial weakness. Good star cast, gre ....

Tenet - movie review
Averting World War III, a secret agent on a dangerous mission and the introduction of a new theory of 'Time reversal' is what Tenet about. If one is looking out for full on entertainment, action, hi-tech gadgets and glamorous girls like Bond films then you might be disappointed. Armed with only one word—Tenet, and fighting for the survival of the entire world, the Protagonist John David Washington journeys through a twilight world of international espionage on a mission that will unfold in something beyond real time in in Christopher Nolan’s original sci-fi action spectacle that was filmed on location across seven countries. Tenet has India connect with Dimple Kapadia playing a significant role that of an International arms dealer. Unlike most of the Hollywood films where India is shown as a third world country, there are scenes like on the streets in South Mumbai, a prestigiou ....

Durgamati hindi movie review
Durgamati is a remake of Bhaagamathie the Telugu flick of 2018, directed by G Ashok who has also helmed the baton for this hindi version. The original was a big success in South and therefore to cash in on that success this movie was remade in Hindi by Akshay Kumar's company Cape of Good Films and produced by Bhushan Kumar of T-Series. Every once in a while we like to see a story which is different from the run-of-the-mill corruption scandal stories as seen on the silver screen. As the saying goes in Bollywood you make something a bit 'hatke' from other movies. Here is an example of 'hatke' as corruption is shown in the garb of horror. Initially when the movie starts it looks like all the characters are play acting, nothing seemed to be right and in its place it all looks very superficial and unconvincing. Taking a convicted murderer who is also an IAS officer to a secluded Haunted ....

Chhalaang movie review
Chhalaang is another OTT original feature film release during the present Covid times and this time it's streaming on Amazon Prime. Lately we have been hearing such names like Chak-de, Dangal, Panga, which point to a desi flavour in tales of inspiration in sports. They are comparable to similar offerings in Hollywood of fight and motivation. Generally such stories are drawn form real life. As the name Chhalaang suggests this movie too deals with the same genre I.e. sports but the inspiration is from a hurt to the ego of one man as, the movie set out to be Montu's story of goof and love but there is a jump literally midway. It changes to a story of the underdog. Though everyone has their respective favourites in sports but one's heart surely goes out for the underdog. The movie is set in a quintessential town of Haryana in North India. Indians love their heroes in the field of sport ....

Ludo (2020) movie review
Netflix's latest offering as their original feature film,  Ludo the eponymous board game which everyone as a child would have played. Lately it seems to have caught on the fancy of young and old alike in it's online Avatar. It sounds like an unlikely name for a movie and does aroused curiosity. Ludo, the movie juxtaposes this game as and with the game of life. One gets excited and is expectant to see something different or new, as for the last few offerings on the various OTT platforms are anything but entertaining or even vaguely logical. It seems that the makers set out to make something good with the kind of themes and story ideas at their disposal but somewhere in the intervening period they lose their way and the story meanders and hurtles towards its climax. Same is the case with Ludo, it starts out with high expectations as a bearded Anurag Basu (the director of the movie) and ....

Laxmii (2020) movie review
This movie was awaited for sometime because people wanted to see Akshay Kumar's daring transgender look in a saree. Laxmii released on OTT platform of Disney Hotstar on the 9th of November 2020. There were some fantastic promos, great posters, super trailers. All of which pointed to an entertaining masala horror movie with good dose of comedy put in to make it a universally watchable. There was also the controversy about its name which was then changed just before release from Laxxmi Bomb to Laxmii. All this was a sure shot formula for success at the hustings. No such luck though as the film Laxmii turned out to be a damp squib. A bomb that never went off. One sat through the whole movie for that moment to come, where the pent up expectation were answered but it never arrived. The start was punchy and it did give a scare down the spine. Then the scene with Akshay busting the myth o ....
