Coffee House – movie review

Four stories running in parallel

Coffee House, movie review

The film is a story about a Coffee House located in a metro city, a place where we have regulars, while some people visit occasionally. It is four stories running simultaneously, showcasing individual problems of each of these people. It is also about staging street plays highlighting social problems, a bit old fashioned in this age of TV and short films which do the same. Coffee House movie review…

The characters develop a sort of closeness amongst each other, gradually even generating a kind of concern for each other too. The crowd here, while discussing individual issues also come up with new ideas that start taking shape and mark a new beginning.

Kamal Kishore (Ashutosh Rana) is an activist, who desires to bring change in the society by staging street theatre. Kavita (Sakshi Tanwar) is Kamal Kishore’s wife who also runs a newspaper. Earlier, Kamal Kishore was a part of the paper’s editorial team along with his wife, and since he would not compromise with his principles he pulls out of the newspaper team in the best interests of the publishing house.
This joint is also frequented by a TV journalist (Harsh Chhaya) and the regular oldies – a group of old men struggling with neglect and lack of respect from their children.

Aarti (Neha Mishra) and Nilesh (Aman Dhaliwal) are a live-in couple who work with Ashutosh. Then Aarti is offered a highly paying job, she deserts Nilesh. Jarnail Singh (Vinod Nagpal) a senior citizen has problems with his son and daughter-in-law. Vrajesh Hirje, Hemant Pandey and Javed Khan are other regulars at the coffee house.

There are several issues about the youth, unemployed and the retired. It is a sensitive film which has feelings, humor, pain and happiness – which could give good leads to a few in the audience, in their own lives.

The passionate Ashutosh Rana and the modern day woman of substance Saakshi Tanwar appear dedicated to their roles in Coffee House. As his directorial debut, Gurbir Singh Grewal does a fair job with Hemant Pandey, Vrajesh Hirjee and Vinod Nagpal as well as the other debutants Aman Dhaliwal and Neha Mishra. Javed Khan the Bengali guy and the flamboyant Harsh Chhaya are notable.

The director shows that the coffee house provides a unique opportunity to interact with each other and exchange views on modern-day issues. Coffee House is a modest and meaningful film that urges the youth to dream big and the power of a common man to bring change in the system.
