The film Loveyapa, a remake of the Tamil hit Love Today, does have an entertaining and youthful take on modern love that sets out to effectively capture digital-age dilemmas, without at the same time being preachy or for that fact, boring to the core.
Loveyapa- movie review..
It revolves around the wafer thin plot of Gaurav (Junaid Khan), who happens to live with his widowed mother and only sister and Baani (Khushi Kapoor) who is the daughter seeking approval from her doting but strict father, a strict Hindi speaking guy (Ashutosh Rana) to get married, and how interestingly he in turn sets a very unusual condition—they must swap their phones for a day.
What does trust mean to a generation that thrives on situation -ships more than just relation-ships forms the crux of the subject. What follows is a chaotic ride as several secrets pop up from their respective cell phones and how they unravel and the innumerable misunderstandings mount.
There is also a parallel track that features Gucci’s sister Kiran (Tanvika Parlikar) and her fiancé Anupam (Kiku Sharda) that sets out to add layers to the wafer-thin narrative particularly as Anupam’s obsessive phone-guarding fuels suspicion.
Loveyapa will appeal to the younger generation especially as it sets out to capture the Gen-Z’s dating landscape, tinder escapades and liberal life well, though I should say that the narrative often makes the viewer feel that it has been overstretched as well as overextended.
As far as the performances are concerned, Junaid Khan is impressive in his first ever film outing, after his debut with the Netflix film Maharaj, effortlessly portraying the young man with oodles of charm. Khushi Kapoor also delivers a noteworthy debut performance as the fragile but firm at the same time, Baani, emoting with ease. Together, they make for a convincing young couple.
Ashutosh Rana simply steals the scene whether he is haggling with the courier boy over the mere two rupee change or the way he breaks down before the climax when he sees his daughter getting embroiled in a porn clip. While Kiku Sharda delivers a restrained performance as the suitor of Gucci’s sister, played by Tanvika Parlikar. Tanvika is also effective. Impressive is the loud and nagging Punjabi mother Grusha Kapoor of Gaurav alias Gucci.
To sum up, all that I can say is that director Chandan Advait’s youthful romcom, originally written by Pradeep Ranganathan, is interesting to the core as well as entertaining. (Running time 138 minutes)
