Ra One - movie review
India’s most expensive film Ra One has finally released, with its aggressive pre-release promotion a month before its release. The special effects are excellent and are comparable to the best in Hollywood. Its concept is fine, the video game subject too is latest. Where it lacks, or what is unwanted is its scenes like the Karwa Chauth which is seen in the typical Indian TV soaps, and the protagonist, which the director thinks all the South Indians are curly haired. Ra One is the story of a father (Shah Rukh Khan) trying hard to ‘fit-in’ in his son’s (Master Armaan Verma) badass world, a cool dude son trying hard to ‘dude-up’ his dad from ‘aiiiyyyo’ to‘yo!’ and a mother (Kareena Kapoor) lost in translation between her husband’s ‘ingeva’ and her son’s ‘in’ it!’ Shah Rukh Khan plays a Subramaniyam - South Indian game designer, who still hasn’t come ....

The Last Lear, movie review
The Last Lear is inspired by the famous Bengali actor, activist and playwright Utpal Dutt and his play "Aajker Shahjehan" (The Emperor Today). The play was about the enormous trust and faith that actors repose on those who support their art. Just as much as it is about the betrayals of that very trust. The Last Lear having a Bollywood star cast is an English language film. It has Amitabh, Arjun Rampal and Preity couldn't have been more perfect. Amitabh hogs the limelight not in as towering personality, but as Harish Mishra. Harish Mishra (Amitabh Bachchan) is the protagonist of this offbeat film. The film-within-the film is a lamentation about the dying art of the circus. As winds of change accompanying neo-liberal policies sweep across the country, older cultural forms give way to newer ones. In this moment of transition, trust and treachery collide and crumble. What does a 65 ....

Om Shanti Om
Om Shanti Om is a Manmohan Desai type of a masala film of the 1970s. It has the premise of reincarnation as was in Subhash Ghai's "Karz". Okay, it is a joyous film which has its silly giggling and overacting in parts, especially the typical mother (Kirron Kher) of a struggler son, who lives, thinks that one day her son would definitely become a super star of Bollywood, since her husband could not fulfill his dream. A typical filmy mother. Its here and a few other scenes where the film appears unrealistic. Debutante Deepika Padukone is the hasina in this case. Shanti has a pretty face, charming smile and an old-world charm… She is the reigning superstar of 70s. Shah Rukh Khan is the deewana, he is in love with her. Om, who is a struggling actor - a junior artist and her biggest fan. He dies in a mishap while watching Shanti in danger on an opulent film set which is on fire. Thi ....

ROY - Hindi movie review
The subject is abstract and more so is the story telling of ROY. This film is not for the masses, its for the pseudo-intellectuals, to be precise. Debutant director Vikramjit Singh who is also the writer of this romantic thriller is innovative in his presentation of life and times of a successful yet quirky filmmaker. A different approach in showing on screen, the moods, senses, sensitive moments and the dreams of a director while he is working on the story simultaneously directing the film. We get a visual treat of colours, the locales, the actual depiction of thought process of a filmmaker, most often dubbed as arrogant and abnormal. About the story, ROY is the creative portrayal of the sketch of a filmmaker who works on his own terms. Kabir Grewal (Arjun Rampal) is a trend-setter film maker who has made 'Guns' and 'Guns II', which is the story of the protagonist in his films, an ....
