A Marathi girl Meenakshi Deshpande (Rani Mukerji) falls in love with a Tamil artist Surya (Prithviraj). Aiyyaa is a funny (and odd) love story with the backdrop of a Tamil – Marathi cultural clash.
Meenakshi, the lead protagonist woos a stranger whom she desires. This young Maharashtrian woman is crazy, filmy and a dreamer who loves escaping into her own fantasy land.
She gets attracted to a painter, Surya (Prithviraj Sukumaran), as he “smells” good. Indian middle class girls usually do not have the freedom to choose their life partner, but here this girl defies her customs and chooses the boy of her dream.
Her parents have fixed her engagement to Madhav (Subodh Bhave). There are some amusing moments in most of the ordinary situations.
Poor girl, she is torn between her family’s choice and the man she desires. Aiyyaa does have its sensitive moments portraying the plight of this dream lover.
The director succeeds in creating a typical Maharashtrian culture and the middle class mentalities often seen in practical life. Most of the romantic scenes are a dream. This filmy crazy Meenakshi day dreams most of the times.
Amit Trivedi’s music is the highlight of this film. Like the ‘Dreamum Wakeuppam’ and the ‘Aga Bai’ songs. Vaibhavi Merchant has shown again why she is a sought after choreographer.
Rani Mukherji is brilliant in the emotional moments, while loud most of the times, it could be because she is shown of a nautanki background. Prithviraj is a cool dude. This superstar of the south has made an impressive debut in hindi films.
A very odd romantic comedy, you could call it as Rani’s comeback film, is a very ordinary fare.
