The Courier - movie review
Just caught up with a superb spy movie inspired by real life incidents of the Cold War. The Courier is set in the world post the Second World War II when the world had been divided into two blocks the Western bloc led by USA and other western powers under the aegis on NATO and the eastern bloc known to be behind the The Iron Curtain which was a political boundary dividing Europe into two separate areas, it denoted the efforts by the Soviet Union (USSR) to block itself and its allied states from open and in direct touch with the West and its allied states. Those were times of cold war. It was called a cold war as it was a war which was never fought but there were a lot of aggression and rhetorical threat to press the nuclear button both by America and its counterpart the USSR. As the world moved from conventional warfare to nuclear superpower states. The movie captures the period in th ....

City of Dreams - Season 2 - review
The second season of this well made family political drama City of Dreams - is here upon us now trending on Disney Hotstar. All you wanted to know how politics works and what people do to remain in power is a lesson beyond that one learnt from Mahabharat as there the fight for power was between cousins but here it is within the family, between the brother-sister in the first season with the brother ending in a watery death at the hands of the sister and now in this season the tussle for power is between daughter and father. The series is structured well as far as the story-screenplay combo goes however it is not entirely seamless as it regresses in flashbacks without warning. The acting department is well managed with veterans Atul Kulkarni and Sachin Pilgaonkar enacting important characters around whom the series usually revolves. There are two surprises though in the form of Ejaz ....

Coolie No 2 (2020) movie review
What is a sure shot formula for a movie's success? A good script, direction, acting or is it screenplay or none of the above. It is but rehash- and that's right, as this seems to be the current flavour for success. Refurbish one's own movies and serving it afresh with new production values, a new star cast and new settings. This is what David Dhavan has done with his own Coolie No 1  (this is his second one after Judwaa). Is it a dearth of new scripts, or did the director find some flaws in his original which he wanted to rectify (if that is the case, then he fails miserably) or was it a tribute to the original that was released in 1995 and now celebrating its Silver Jubilee year? The original Coolie No 1 with Govinda and Karishma was an entertainer and delight to watch. This time around he has taken his son Varun Dhavan to reprise the role of Raju coolie and Sara Ali Khan appears ....

Chhalaang movie review
Chhalaang is another OTT original feature film release during the present Covid times and this time it's streaming on Amazon Prime. Lately we have been hearing such names like Chak-de, Dangal, Panga, which point to a desi flavour in tales of inspiration in sports. They are comparable to similar offerings in Hollywood of fight and motivation. Generally such stories are drawn form real life. As the name Chhalaang suggests this movie too deals with the same genre I.e. sports but the inspiration is from a hurt to the ego of one man as, the movie set out to be Montu's story of goof and love but there is a jump literally midway. It changes to a story of the underdog. Though everyone has their respective favourites in sports but one's heart surely goes out for the underdog. The movie is set in a quintessential town of Haryana in North India. Indians love their heroes in the field of sport ....

C U Soon on Amazon Prime
Every once in a while something new comes up on the OTT platform, we're talking about the latest Malayalam offering on Amazon prime by the name of C U Soon. The uniqueness of this movies lies in the fact that it has been entirely shot on an Iphone and whatever interaction is shown between the characters on the screen is entirely on a phone (video chatting) or on social media by text or video on a computer monitor. C U Soon the movie uses only the digital platforms. It definitely was a singular experience and a good one at that. There is not much we can talk about the story as we have seen such movies before in fact recently the Vidyut Jamwal movie Khuda Hafiz was based on this very theme of how recruitment agencies send unsuspecting young girls abroad, specially the Middle-East countries, on a promise of a lucrative job and how they end up only being sex slaves there, but the treatmen ....

CID 1956
The biggest grosser of 1956 - Dev Anand's CID had many a firsts to its credit. It was the first movie directed by Raj Khosla under Guru Dutt banner and was also his debut direction. Khosla always acknowledged Dutt as his true Guru. It was the first time that Dev Anand acted in a movie produced by Guru Dutt. As legend has it both Guru Dutt and Dev Anand were friends from their struggling days and had a pact that Dev will give a chance to Dutt to direct his home production and Guru will give a chance to Dev to act under him, though Dutt did not exactly direct the movie but the quid pro quo was carried out as Dutt had directed Dev in his home production Baazi. This was also Waheeda Rehman's debut Bollywood movie, prior to being spotted by Dutt in a Telugu movie she had done a few movies down south. Though he gave a supporting actress role to her in the movie, it was for honing her skills ....

Chori Chori 1956
A fun film from the AVM stables. Chori Chori was the last movie pairing Raj Kapoor and Nargis together ending an era of on and off screen romance between the two. It was adapted from the famous Hollywood movie with Clark Gable, Frank Capra’s ‘It Happened One Night’. Some fantastic music of that era was provided by the duo of Shankar Jaikishan who received the Filmfare award for the music rendered for the movie of romantic musical genre. Directed by Anant Thakur for AVM studios. Though Chori Chori was their last movie together but the on screen chemistry between Nargis and Raj Kapoor was still crackling. Apart from the lead the supporting star cast were also known faces of the Film Industry of that time including Pran, David, Johnny Walker and the duo of Gope and Bhagwandada (remember ‘Naam bade aur Darshan Chote’). The movie was in black and white but two of its songs were s ....

Such comedies can only be pulled off by Kishore Kumar, the genius. What strikes you about him in the early movies, and particularly in Chalti Ka Naam Gaadi, is his busy energy. Not only do his songs which he sang for other actors haunt us to this day but the movies he directed, produced, wrote and acted in were not all comedies but some socials too with a message. When we mention Kishore Kumar what comes to mind is the maverick comedian, doing as he pleases but still able to raise the laughs, it wasn’t only what he did but his persona was such that even a silly thing would evoke laughter. Same is the case with this movie which seems to have been made with a mind that it may flop but the reverse happened and it went on to be a hit and he nominated the rights of the movie to his secretary to avoid Income Tax issues. Chalti Ka Naam Gaadi is one of the few movies to star all the thre ....

Chupke Chupke 1975
Another movie from the buzzing year 1975 but this time a refreshing comedy in the category of an Indian classic. With all the main course servings of 1975 like Deewar, Sholay and all, Chupke Chupke was like the proverbial sweet dish, an icing on the cake for the year. Chupke Chupke is one more social comedy from the Hrishikesh Mukherjee stable with great direction, best actors of that era and melodious music. Based on Upendranath Ganguly’s Bengali tale ‘Chaddobeshi’, the dialogues were written wittingly by Gulzar. With a remarkable star cast of Dharmendra, Amitabh, Sharmila Tagore, Jaya Bhaduri, Asrani, David, Om Prakash and Keshto Mukherjee, the film's music is composed by Sachinda (Sachin Dev Burman). Dr. Parimal Tripathi (Dharmendra) is a Professor of Botany, due to circumstances he doubles as a watchman to a Girls' Botany camping group however his identity is exposed to S ....
