Mihirr Upadhyay’s short film ‘Meri Sakhi’ is inspired by Arun Gourisaria’s poem and narrated by Shefali Shah. It pays tribute to the elegance and cultural significance of the saree.

Written and Directed by Mihirr Upadhyay, Meri Sakhi highlights the saree as the true ambassador of Indian fashion. This short film showcases that this Indian dress has valiantly stood by the Indian woman transgressing through various stages, moods and situations of her life journey.

The short film is inspired by featuring the Saree, an Indian apparel that is symbol of grace and tradition and continues to influence global fashion, and enhancing this appeal is the poetry of Arun Gourisaria, beautifully narrated by celebrated actress Shefali Shah.

The short film Meri Sakhi is a tribute to the Naari (Woman) and the iconic garment – Saree.

Speaking to Paresh B. Mehta, Editor of Filmytown.com, Mihirr Upadhyay observed, “We usually miss to notice the friendship of a Saree and a Woman that is in existence maybe since thousands of years.”

“Since the age of Goddesses till today’s most regular lady, the Saree has been instrumental through their lives. Even men aren’t spared from the Saree as most of them as a child have used their mother’s ‘pallu’ to wipe their faces or the stubborn child clutching it to make his mother fulfil his wish,” he stated.

Mihirr adds, “The versatility or emotions and expressions that a Saree has for a woman are many. Like wearing it on head saves her from humility, or in the regular form of Annapurna (the homemaker), expressing romanticism by letting go off her Pallu (the decorated end of a Saree), or crying in private under the guise her saree. This friendship of Saree and participation in every moment of a woman’s life has intrigued me and I tried to convey as many emotions, moods, situations and other attributes of this apparel.”

Shot over 32 days, the film was shot across several states of India including Maharashtra, Uttarakhand, UP, Tamil Nadu, West Bengal and Gujarat. Shot on Alexa 35 it depicts over 25 different forms of sarees from different states.

“The friendship of Saree and the Woman explores various characters displaying emotions, auras, attitudes and moods of a woman walking through various stages in her life as that of a child, school girl, teenager, friend, lover, student, as a professional, a homemaker, wife, mother and the grandmother. Therefore this friendship deserved this tribute,” Mihirr Upadhyay ended stressing that Meri Sakhi is a Celebration of infinite bonding of Saree and the Woman.

Internationally acclaimed Short filmmaker having made 3 short films – The Blind Date, Good night Sleep tight and Take Away (nearing release) with the first two fetching over 40 awards and accolades in International Film Festivals, Mihirr Upadhyay has beautifully captured the moods and emotions of the bonding and relationship between the Saree and Woman in his just released short film Meri Sakhi.
