Ghudchadi – movie review

Sarchadhi - Sheer waste of talent and time

Ghudchadi movie pic

Streaming on the OTT platform – JIO Cinema, the first mention of this movie Ghudchadi would bring a picture in the mind of that of a big fat Indian wedding. By the way Ghudchadi is a North Indian custom during the wedding celebrations, the groom comes riding on a white mare along with a procession towards the wedding venue, usually being the bride’s home or any place arranged by the bride’s family.

However the ‘band baaja and  baraat’ arrives only at the fag end of the movie and this happens after a lot of rona dhona, an unraveling of a truth and a car accident.

It starts as an innocent tale of a family who love and respect each other, consisting of three individuals – one is the grandma Kalyani Devi (Aruna Irani), her son Veer (Sanjay Dutt) and her grandson Chirag (Parth Samthaan). The grandma is keen to get her grandson married before she kicks the bucket.

It surely doesn’t fall in the A list film category, but more like one of those marriage comedy films which have spawned aplenty in the last few years on OTT platforms with similar themes. However you still have Dutt, and Irani in the film.

On the other side for the men’s love interest there is the ravishing Raveena Tandon who is shown as mother of an olding Khushalli Kumar. The story goes through its twists and turns everybody zombieizing through their respective characters, but the cohesion is missing and the film has utter lack of screen play.

TGIF but this supposed marriage comedy is not released in the theatres and that is the greatest credit to the movie. Dutt and Tandon looked uncomfortable as a couple and Sanjay Dutt in a ‘sanaskari’ role, often touching Irani’s feet and not going against her wishes, while he is also successfully managing a grown up son! Casting woes?

To evoke nostalgia the makers even roped in bhangra king Sukhbir (of Ho ho ho ho ho Ishq Tera tadpave fame) for one song to give Punjabi Munda feel to a wedding.

Often the dialogues take a downright plunge to casteist and third grade level like ‘doosre ki rajai se badbu aati hai’ this specifically refers about getting married to another caste woman. There are plenty of  such dialogues, with another dialogue about one being unable to control one’s sexual urges even at an age of 50+.

Rest of the  supporting cast is not even introduced properly. It was really courageous of Dutt and Tandon to be a part of this movie. This comes as a surprise that the brilliant actress Raveena Tandon after receiving kudos for her role in Patna Shukla, that was also released on OTT sometime back, decided to do this movie.

The title should have been ‘Sarchadhi’. A sheer waste of talent and time – the film has a running time of 119 minutes!

Streaming on JioCinema.
