Apartment was earlier titled ‘Roommates’, is inspired by the Hollywood film ‘Single White Female’ starring Bridget Fonda and Jennifer Jason Leigh.
Preeti Sengupta (Tanushree Dutta) is an airhostess who is scouting for a place to live in Mumbai. She manages to find an apartment (flat) and lives in living in with her boyfriend Karan Malhotra (Rohit Roy). Their flat is on the 8th floor of the multi storey building and they have a single, elderly neighbour Anupam Kher, who is a struggling poet and lyricist. Apartment movie review…
The drawback of Preeti is that she is very possessive and has a doubting nature. Once, when she mistakenly suspects Karan to be unfaithful, she throws her boyfriend out of the house. Karan contributed towards half of the monthly payment for their apartment.
Now that Preeti cannot afford the payment of the flat on her own, so on her friend’s advice, she advertises for a tenant to share her apartment.
This is where Neha Bharadwaj (Neetu Chandra), comes into her life. Neha is a humble small-town girl looking for a shared accommodation. Preeti is very impressed by Neha’s simplicity and respectfulness and believes she has found a perfect paying guest / tenant.
Neha is the adjusting, helping type who addresses Preeti as ‘didi’ and even takes off the burden of Preeti’s cooking. Their friendship leads them to even become companions. Until things begin to go tragically wrong.
Preeti’s happy-go-lucky lifestyle is soon thrown off gear, as there is more to Neha who actually appears as simple as she seems and she obsessively takes over Preeti’s personal life.
Neetu Chandra cunningly uses every trick in the book to make Tanushree’s life miserable. She pulls up her performance very well as the simpleton from a modest town to the mod girl after Tanushree grooms her and how she even eyes her landlord’s boyfriend. Anupam Kher’s single status and attachment to his pet cat is very touching. Rohit Roy, like his brother Ronit Roy is a handsome actor and its nice to see him come back after a long time.
Director Jag Mundhra comes up with a fairly taut thriller, which is more so absorbing in the second half. He has skillfully adapted the story decently well to suit Indian sensibilities.
In view of other films in the halls, Apartment is a watchable thriller.
