Many Bollywood actors have turned towards direction now and during the past, there are quite a few established stars who will soon be donning the directors hat.
The transition from acting to directing is a move and balance that some of the biggest actors have taken over the years, and several Bollywood actors have taken on this challenge, proving their mettle both on screen and also behind the camera.
These actors have successfully balanced their acting careers and also delved into filmmaking, proving that their creative abilities extend beyond acting. Their directorial journeys continue to inspire many in the industry.
Here are some actors who have made a mark as directors or are soon set to do so:

Aamir Khan
Aamir Khan made his directorial debut with Taare Zameen Par in 2007, a heartfelt drama centered on dyslexia. Starring Darsheel Safary, with Khan playing a supporting role, the film garnered critical and commercial acclaim. It also won the National Film Award for Best Film on Family Welfare, solidifying Aamir’s prowess as a filmmaker.
Hrithik Roshan
Hrithik Roshan is set to step into the director’s chair with Krrish 4, the highly anticipated next installment in his successful superhero franchise. Fans eagerly await his vision for the film, marking his entry into filmmaking.
Ajay Devgn
Ajay Devgn has successfully directed three high-budget films. His directorial journey began with Shivaay, an action-packed thriller. He followed it with Runway 34, inspired by real-life events, and Bholaa, a remake of the Tamil hit Kaithi. His directorial ventures showcase his penchant for intense storytelling and grand visuals.
Randeep Hooda
Randeep Hooda made his directorial debut with Swatantrya Veer Savarkar, a biographical drama about Vinayak Damodar Savarkar. Apart from directing, Hooda also played the titular role and produced the film. His commitment to the project was so intense that he underwent significant weight loss and suffered a severe leg injury while preparing for the role.
R. Madhavan
R. Madhavan ventured into direction with Rocketry: The Nambi Effect, a biographical drama about ISRO scientist Nambi Narayanan. Madhavan not only directed but also wrote and produced the film. The movie chronicles Narayanan’s journey, from his time at Princeton University to his wrongful espionage accusation and subsequent exoneration.
Sunny Deol
Sunny Deol first directed Dillagi, a romantic drama featuring his brother Bobby Deol and Urmila Matondkar. He returned to direction with Ghayal Once Again, an action drama and sequel to Ghayal. His latest directorial venture, Pal Pal Dil Ke Paas, was a romantic drama that launched his son, Karan Deol, into Bollywood.
Vir Das
India’s biggest global comedian and actor Vir Das is set to make his directorial debut with the upcoming film, Happy Patel. It has been reported that his co-actor from the film Delhi Belly Imran Khan will be leading the project.

Sonu Sood
Renowned actor and philanthropist Sonu Sood made his much-anticipated directorial debut with the action drama film Fateh. Not only did he direct the movie, but he also played the title role, bringing his signature intensity and dedication to the project. Known for his powerful screen presence and versatility, Sonu Sood’s transition to directing showcases his deep understanding of storytelling and action-packed cinema.
Kangana Ranaut
National Award-winning actress Kangana Ranaut stepped into direction with the grand period drama Manikarnika: The Queen of Jhansi. Taking on the dual responsibility of both directing and portraying the title role of the fearless warrior queen. She has also directed and acted in Emergency, a biopic based on India’s former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi.
Kunal Khemu
Popular actor Kunal Khemu made his directorial debut with the comedy caper Madgaon Express, featuring an ensemble cast including Pratik Gandhi, Avinash Tiwary, and Divyendu Sharma. Known for his impeccable comic timing, Kunal ventured into direction with a fun and lighthearted film that promises laughter and entertainment. His transition from actor to director adds another dimension to his already impressive career in the industry.
