Indian cinema, Media and Entertainment industry wield significant global influence. Waves Bazaar, a key segment of WAVES 2025 being held in Mumbai is a testament to this impact, compelling the world to take notice. With immense potential, India is advancing rapidly on the global stage and is now poised to become a world leader in entertainment.
Upbeat about this initiative, now the time has come that Indian cinema has come up with new technology and global standards like Hollywood, Korean, Chinese, Iranian, Russian cinema.
Waves is providing a platform to creators in various ways, opening a global platform as well as instilling enthusiasm in new artists. Let’s explore the basic issues plaguing the present Indian M & E industry.
The foremost question is – Will Bollywood recover it’s lost glory?
With the emergence of a plethora of platforms, existence so many announcements, it is ironical to notice that on the other hand Bollywood is frequently falling prey to financial problems. Each year, more than almost 500 films are released, but how many are successful? Leave apart being blockbusters though several among these the cinema are mostly star studded. One begins to wonder whether the filmmakers are really into making movies, sinking someone’s money or losing their own money? While delving deeper one thing that stands out that there is a lacuna of Indianness and lack of our culture connect in these stories, probably the main reason why the films are not able to do business. This seems to be the core problem that leads to the financial crisis.
Who is managing the stories?
A story is a recorded form of a writer’s vision and then the director weaves his imagination around this story. As a majority of films are produced by corporate houses, the new trend in Bollywood is that there is a team of corporate and MBAs who have nothing to do with the story, living it or imagining it, and it is them who decide to green flag a story. Most of these corporate executives lack the understanding of our deep rooted Indian traditions and cultures with a majority of them having earned a degree from some Western Universities.
The Buyer Seller Bazaar
Traditionally, the writer used to narrate his story to the producer in a quiet environment that aids to having a rapt attention of the producer. Unfortunately such a calm and peaceful ambience was lacking at the Buyer-Seller Bazar that instantly appeared as noisy as a ‘fish market’. Though the buyer and seller sitting close to each other where the stories are being told, new projects were being pitched there, that exclusivity was missing. How is it possible that you explain your entire story and point in just five to fifteen minutes? No doubt, most of the WAVES Bazaar has developed a systematic process, perhaps what should have happened was that some personal space should have been provided for such meetings, possibly like compartmentalized cabins where the writer could command rapt attention of the producer or the corporate where he could have adequately conveyed his point effectively.
The intention of Waves Bazaar is that India achieves the status of being a Gobal Guru of the entertainment world. The Honourable Prime Minister’s vision is to develop India as a global power by infusing new avenues and opportunities to new artists and entrepreneurs new platforms and connect them to the global world.
