The Odyssey is an action fantasy film based on Homer’s ancient Greek epic poem, rather than being based on historical facts. By depicting Greek mythology, the film serves as a legendary reflection of Bronze Age seafaring, trade, and cultural encounters in the Mediterranean.
Furthermore, whereas the film stands out as a visual marvel, it also depicts a deeply poignant exploration of the enduring human spirit. Specifically, the narrative meticulously charts the prolonged, perilous, and hurdle-ridden return journey of Odysseus, the King of Ithaca, following his triumph in the Trojan War.

Notwithstanding the above challenges, Odysseus and his crew also have to face violent storms unleashed by Zeus, leading to delays and food shortages, hostile lands and being stranded at sea for prolonged periods.
Upon finally reaching Ithaca, Odysseus must confront a treacherous den of suitors threatening his wife, Penelope and their son Telemachus, while simultaneously navigating the volatile whims of the gods. Odysseus is at the heart of this struggle. He perfectly shows classic ideals, uses quick-wit and cunning strategies. He also shows unyielding perseverance against impossible odds.
A Visual Feast of Epic Battles and Mythic Escapes
Hoyte van Hoytema, the cinematographer has shot many large scenes beautifully. This movie looks amazing and has breathtaking details. Some great moments include huge, brutal war scenes. Also, the dark, magical forests feel deeply real. The King does not always win. Sometimes his plans fail and he must retreat. Finally, the fast, scary escapes from witches and demons are exciting to watch.
With a duration of 173 minutes, there are quite a few moments that could be termed as over-stretched.
Fascinating similarities between Ramayana and The Odyssey
Both stories place the hero’s wife at the centre of the conflict. Although the circumstances differ, both narratives revolve around wives whose unwavering faith drives the emotional core of the story. With Ma Sita’s unwavering devotion towards Lord Rama. Likewise in The Odyssey it is Penelope, the Queen of Ithica towards Odysseus.
In the Ramayana, Sita’s swayamvar in Mithila challenges princes to lift and string Lord Shiva’s divine bow. A similar contest unfolds in Odyssey. Another similarity is the presence of a golden deer, an illusion created to lure Lord Rama away, in Odyssey it is the hunting of a deer that reveals Odysseus about the absence of his soldiers.
Heavy cost of War and Love
Beyond the spectacle, the film carries a profound message about the devastating consequences of war and the enduring nature of love. It masterfully explores heavy themes of guilt and regret, illustrating how the choices of the past ripple down to impact future generations. Ultimately, it serves as a powerful reminder of the lasting weight of conflict on the human conscience. Similarly the vital, agonizing necessity of confronting our deepest memories.
Nolan’s Odyssey: Out of reach for those in rural India?
Christopher Nolan shot the entire film on IMAX cameras, making Odyssey a visual delight to watch on IMAX screens. Therefore for the masses, it would probably be beyond their reach to take their family to watch it in an IMAX cinema hall.
There are only 35 operational IMAX screens across India – as per latest data. Mumbai Metropolitan Region having 9 screens having the maximum. Bengaluru has 6, Delhi-NCR 8 screens and Pune city has 2 IMAX screens. Kolkata, Ahmedabad, Lucknow, Surat, Coimbatore, Kochi, and Thiruvananthapuram have one screen each. Ticket prices for IMAX screens in Mumbai generally range from a minimum of ₹400 to a maximum of ₹3,100.
Ultimately, how many families across India would be able to take their children to watch this magnum opus in a IMAX cinema hall? A majority of them have to be satisfied with watching it in 2D or other common formats.
The Reality of Indian Multiplexes: Why True IMAX Remains Out of Reach
Consequently, there are currently no commercial cinema halls in India that project the true 1.43:1 aspect ratio IMAX version for major feature films. Instead, every commercial multiplex in India uses the standard “Digital IMAX” format (1.90:1 aspect ratio).
