Sholay (1975)
Sholay (1975) was not just a movie, but a full scale audio and visual experience which was absolutely new to the Indian audience in the seventies and it was not just about achieving perfection in all departments. Be it casting, acting, direction, a balanced story, fantastic screen-play and out of the world dialogues, but it had something absolutely novel to offer the Indian audience for the first time, a wide screen experience. Indian cinema was hitherto been confined to a 35MM screen almost squarish and no one had experimented with the 70mm visual delight it just created magic. Staying Alive - movie review
Sujit Sen, the talented script writer has come up with a fine black comedy Staying Alive, which borrows from real life. Staying Alive is based on a true story of a journalist Aditya (Anant Mahadevan) whose third heart attack sends him to the intensive cardiac care at a hospital. On the neighboring bed is an underworld kingpin, Shaukat Ali (Saurabh Shukla) whose love of kebabs has led him to his first heart attack. Aditya is a newspaper sub-editor while Shaukat Ali is a hardened gangster and ironically it is Shaukat who is petrified of dying, while Aditya scoffs at death. The “seasoned” Aditya scoffs at death whereas newcomer to-heart-ailments Shaukat is petrified. Shakal Pe Mat Ja is an unconventional film and its title itself sounds funny. The concept is interesting, and the four protagonists are very natural, but the film lags in its departments of screenplay and editing.
